Last night Johnny and I were able to attend the premiere of the new film Unitards. It's being distributed by a company I kinda work with, so I was lucky enough to get some tickets (and a free date night, hooray!). It was a goofy, fun, film--perfect for families or anyone who likes a good, clean movie.

It was fun meeting the cast, and guess what I learned?! For my Alta Hawks, remember Vice Principle Mr. Spurlock? His son is the redhead I'm standing next to--cool, huh! He was one of the main characters in the film. Anyway, it was a fun night and I recommend seeing Unitards.

I'm a new mom, and yes, I nurse. But I have mixed feelings about doing it in public.

I am so grateful to be able to give my baby breast milk, and I love that it's healthy, easy, and free. But I'm not so sure about feeding her in public. I understand that it's not indecent exposure; it's a beautiful thing for a mother to feed her child. But I feel so awkward doing it, and I know people around me feel awkward, too.

I bring this up because we recently had a discussion in the LDS Living office about breastfeeding in public. There is a mother in someone's ward who breastfeeds during sacrament meeting. She is very considerate of others and covers herself, but everyone in the congregation can still hear it, and that bothers some people.

The Salt Lake Tribune ran an article a few months ago on a mother who was asked to nurse in a more private area while out shopping (she was not wearing a nursing cover). Long story short, she was in the right and other customers will have to accept it in the future. But is it wrong that I kind of feel bad for those other customers? I know it's not pornographic - I'm a nursing mother, I get it. But I also wouldn't want my husband or a teenage son to see another woman's breast. Is that wrong?

Baby Girl has no choice; she is being brainwashed to love the piano. She listened to it every day for three hours while she was in my belly, and now she listens to it 24/7 by either me, my family, or the iPod that plays in her crib. I try to let her bang on the piano every now and then, and she actually seems to enjoy it, as you can see by the look on her face! I'll try not to be one of those crazy moms who tries to live their dreams through their kids, but I would love for at least one of my babies to attend Julliard. Is that too much to ask? (Okay, yes, it is. But a mom can dream.)

There is only one movie in the world I would pay the overpriced IMAX theatre tickets for, and that is the one and only Beauty and the Beast. We took Baby Girl because I wanted her first movie to be the greatest movie ever, and she totally loved it. Alright, she might have slept through most of it, but her subconscience was loving it. Johnny came, as it's his favorite Disney movie, too (who can resist a man who loves B&B?), and my bestie, Hailey, also came--we had a really hard time not singing along!

casserole contest at work

Can I just say, my job is the best. For the past couple of weeks I've been organizing a casserole contest at LDS Living and readers have been submitting their best recipes for a chance to be featured in our next issue. We've done it before with cookies and soup--you've probably seen our cookie winner, Lemon Crinkle Cookies, floating around Pinterest. Well, today we finally had our test kitchen and literally served hundreds (maybe even a thousand) sample cups full of a couple dozen casseroles. It was a close call but we have our winner and runner-ups. Stay tuned starting next week for the award-winning recipes! (I made the above picture of a Panini Caprese Casserole submitted by one of our readers. So good!)

Baby Girl is growing up and loving life! She has accidentally rolled over twice, sits up by herself for about 20 seconds at a time, and is eating lots of peaches these days. Stop it right now! Just stop growing, please. I love reading books together, taking baths together, and having her sit in my lap while I work. We are inseparable and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Having children makes Christmas a million times better. I'm finally excited about Christmas again! Baby Girl met Santa Claus but wasn't so sure about it (what baby is?). Dani and Bryan came from New York and the whole family was there except my brother, Kash, who's on a mission in the Philippines. We got to call him and Baby Girl even screamed for him.

I feel so blessed to have a wonderful family, husband, daughter, and most importantly, Savior. This Christmas has been a reminder for me of what we're really celebrating, and I'm so grateful for His love and sacrifice. Happy Christmas!

10 baby items i can't live without

I've only been doing the whole mom thing for 4+ months now, but I've learned what I can and can't live without when it comes to baby supplies. I wish someone would have sat me down and told me which things were fluff and which were actually necessary. Here are my top ten things I personally think every mom needs.

#1 Sleeper Bags

Trying to bundle a baby tight enough so they don't kick the blankets off is nearly impossible. They're like Houdini. These pajamas are the best because when she kicks the blankets off, I know she's still warm.

#2 Snap n Go Stroller

I cannot tell you how convenient this thing is. It is so lightweight, folds practically flat, and the baby's carseat snaps in and out. So easy.

#3 Bundleme

This is perfect for wintertime; it's a blanket that zips over the carseat. I don't have to worry about her being cold or blankets falling off of her (which happens a lot without one of these).

#4 Binky Clip

Before I bought a binky clip I had to take a stash of binkies with me wherever I went because they were hitting the ground left and right. This is a lifesaver.

#5 Electric Double Breast Pump

I work (and Baby Girl never learned to latch) so this has allowed me to still feed her breastmilk. Also, it's allowed me to pump extra milk to store for later, which brings me to ...

#6 Breastmilk Storage Bags

Because of these, I think I have like 2 months of milk in my freezer. Bless them.

#7 Boppy

The possibilities are endless with this thing. It's great for nursing, holding my baby in my arms, propping my baby on the floor, as a booster when she's sitting in my lap ... this thing is awesome and I use it every day.

#8 Diaper Genie

Our nursery doesn't smell like poop. Enough said.

#9 Portable Changing Pad

The first time I changed Baby Girl on one of those pull down changing stations in a public bathroom I just about died. I laid like 50 paper towels down but still felt gross. This thing is a must if you don't want your baby to get a disease (okay, I exaggerate, kind of).

#10 Bumbo

Like the boppy, this has multiple uses: highchair, entertain yourself chair, we don't want you to have a flat spot from lying down all the time chair. It's great.

We made these for breakfast this weekend--delish.

Mini German Pancakes

from Real Mom Kitchen

1 cup milk

6 eggs

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

1 tsp. citrus zest (optional--I used grapefruit)

1/4 cup butter, melted

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Blend first six ingredients (milk thru zest) in a blender. Be careful to see that any flour clumps get well-blended.
Blend in butter a little at a time in order to temper the eggs.
Grease muffin tins well and distribute batter evenly (about halfway full). Bake for about 12 minutes, or until puffy and golden on top.
Serve with your favorite toppings.

Our neighborhood does the coolest things: walkabouts, parades, and just last week, a live nativity. There's a lady in our ward who is lovingly nicknamed Mayor Marcia, and she puts together the funnest activities. The whole neighborhood gathered this week for the story of Christ's birth, Christmas music, a canned food drive, and a petting zoo. It was awesome, and it's a great way to not get stuck in the rut of "ward only" activities. When we move to another neighborhood I want to be Mayor Marcia.

For Thanksgiving we flew to Texas so Johnny and Baby Girl could meet them fam. (I can't believe we've been married four years and he still hasn't met all my family. Is that normal?) It started out with a stop at Cattlemen's, a restaurant featured last week on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (the greatest TV show ever), to eat lamb fries, aka lamb testicles. Gross. I had half a bite before I started crying--ahh, these hormones!

My grandparents still live in the same house my mom grew up in, and we had fun going through decades of their stuff and finding a million old pictures, like the one of my mom below. So cute! We even got to see our besties, Brittany and Brett, who moved to Texas on Thanksgiving. How random and wonderful!

It was all fun until we tried flying home (note: NEVER try to fly standby over Thanksgiving weekend). After a day of not making any flights, we rented a car and drove 27 hours straight from Texas to Utah. Not fun. Although, we did stop in Colorado to see Johnny's brother and their new baby.

This past weekend both Johnny's and my best friends got married (not to each other, though. haha.) It was a fantastic wedding weekend full of cake, temples, funny toasts, lots of snow, and only one poopy diaper explosion. Pretty much, it was the happiest weekend ever.

My bestie, Brittany, married the wonderful Brett in the Draper Temple. Johnny and I are so happy for them. SO happy. Their reception looked like it walked right out of a Martha Stewart magazine. Yeah, that's how awesome it was. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes through my Pinterest feed tomorrow. Anyway, yay for the Titensors! You guys are our favs!

And speaking of favs, Johnny's best friend, Kyle, was also married. I love his new couple name: Kyle and Mary Perry. That's right, it rhymes. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple and had the best/funniest dinner I've ever been to. Having an adventurous, slightly irresponsible side (I can say that because my own husband has been a part of many of these irresponsible activities) makes for some really good toasts. Congrats, and yay for weddings!

I saw a doll that looked like this on Etsy that I just HAD to have for Baby Girl, but it cost like $50! I really wanted it, so I figured I would just make it myself. So I did. And this cute little dolly is she. I'm actually pretty proud of how she turned out! It only took me all stinkin day to make her, but she's totally worth it.

Last week I helped throw one of my very best friends, Brittany, a bridal shower. (I have to give a shout out to Kellie Whittaker, who hosted the shower with me.) Brittany threw me a shower four years ago and I have been eagerly waiting to do the same for her. We had a fun photo booth with props, delicious food, and a fun game that included Skyping her fiance, Brett, who lives in Texas. Oh, and Johnny even got to be there as our IT guy :)

I had so much fun planning this shower, I seriously think I might consider becoming a party planner one day. I can't even imagine getting paid to do something so fun; I would do it for free!

October 28 was Baby Girl's 3-month birthday and we threw a little mini party. While in Hawaii, we met a young couple with a baby and they said they celebrated every month with a cake, which made us feel like inadequate parents because we only celebrate with a high five for making it that far as new parents.

So I made a cake (which I actually had to make for work anyway) and we sang "Happy Birthday" to Baby Girl. Fun, fun. Oh, and notice how she is sitting in her bumbo chair?! She hates it, but I require that she loves it--it's too convenient not to.

Johnny and I threw a little Halloween party last night for all of our friends. We had an Iron Chef: Pumpkin contest (thanks, Kate, for the idea!), donut-eating contest, and a costume contest. Can I just say our friends are awesome and the food and costumes were amazing. Heather Heyland's pumpkin french toast, and Whitney and Tyler Bell's Nightmare Before Christmas costumes blew everyone away.

Johnny and I dressed up as a couple from the 1970s, and Baby Girl was Minnine Mouse for about an hour before she had a diaper explosion and ruined it. I can't believe Johnny squeezed into those pants; I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even be able to zip them up!

Whoever invented picture boards where stick your head through is a genius. Who doesn't stop to take their picture in one of these? No one, that's who.

We went on a hike in the bamboo forest. It was super fun, that is, until someone spotted a spider the size of a golf ball. Suddenly, the hike wasn't as much fun for us ladies. And Bryan. Haha, just kidding, Bryan.

Baby Girl's first time in the ocean! We didn't dare get more than her feet wet, but she seemed to like it better than the pool.

Bryan was floating on an inner tube and got eaten by this wave. It's always a lot funnier when it doesn't happen to you.

On our last day Baby Girl finally had fun in the pool. She even got her hair wet. We swam so much that she passed out within seconds of sitting in my lap. How is that even comfortable!?

maui part 2

We woke up at 3:15 one morning so we could drive up to the top of Haleakala (a volcano) to watch the sunrise. Watching the sun come up from an elevation of 10,000 ft. was a-ma-zing. There were over 100 people there but the atmosphere was so reverent; no one spoke as we waited in silence. The clouds looked like a blanket that went as far as the eye could see, and the sun lit the whole sky on fire. I totally recommend this if you're ever in Maui.

The hotel rented out bocci ball, and my family sure does love a good game of bocci ball. We're pretty serious about it, as you can see from the above picture. We were measuring whose ball was the closest. We made quite the spectacle of ourselves at the hotel, but it was too much fun to care.

My sister Sierra, Mummsie, and brother Jett. (My mom just leaned over my shoulder while typing this and wants everyone to know her hair does not usually look like a cockatoo.)

My first (and last) time eating at Bubba Gump Shrimp. I'm allergic to shellfish and the only thing I could eat was a salad, and it was pretty crappy. Johnny says it was the best shrimp of his life. Sorry, babe.

Johnny's cousin Ryan and his family live in Maui. He and his son Bono spent the day with us at Big Beach.

More pool time. We were going to make this baby like the water no matter what!

maui part 1

As an early Christmas present, my mom flew my whole family out to Maui last week. Best. Present. Ever. Baby Girl was a dream child and slept practically the whole flight, and Johnny was a dream husband and carried her in her little pouch the whole time. The airline had a game called "Halfway to Hawaii" on the flight where passengers were given all the flight's statistics and had to guess at what time we would geographically be halfway to Hawaii. My husband the pilot got out his calculator and guessed the exact time down to the second. He rocks. And he won us a sweet Hawaiian CD.

We stayed in Kaanapali at the Marriott--amazing. This is my sister Dani and her husband, Bryan, chillin in the hammock.

This was Baby Girl's first time at the beach and we took about a million pictures, but I will spare you from the masses. (Actually, she had a lot of "firsts" on this trip so we literally have 550 pictures from the week.)

Another first: swimming. And Baby Girl was NOT having it. Dani tried to ease her into it, but in the end, we just dunked her anyway. She's gotta learn sometime!

Baby Girl stopped crying for like two seconds and I wanted a family picture so Johnny hurried and hopped into the pool, clothes and all. Haha, what a good husband.

I'm guessing all babies love water, but Baby Girl LOVES water. She took her first bath in her whale tub and we love it. Oh, and don't you just love the sexy robe I'm wearing? Yeah, I took that from the hospital and I wear it all the time. Don't be surprised if you come over to my house at 2 p.m. and I'm wearing it.

Hooray for fall! We took another drive through the Alpine Loop and the colors were unbelievable. These photos are hardly even touched up; it really is that pretty up there.

Daisy is crazy smart and somehow knew we were going on a drive. She was in the back of the truck and waiting before we were even outside. Actually, sometimes Daisy even sleeps in the car so we don't leave her on our next car ride. It's kind of sad and funny at the same time. We also took Lenny Jones and even got him to smile and sing Beach Boys songs with us in the car :) Oh, and this is the second time we have forgotten our baby carrier and I had to hike with Baby Girl in my arms. That's a workout. I don't recommend it.

Yesterday was Baby Girl's baby blessing. Johnny did such an amazing job and gave her a beautiful blessing. My cousin suggested I record it on my iPhone (how did I ever function before I got one?!), which was awesome because I actually got to enjoy it without worrying about remembering every single detail.

Also, Johnny's parents finally got to meet Baby Girl! Too bad they missed her newborn stage (if she even ever had one), because our little two-month-old is already wearing six-month-old clothes. No, seriously. She's huge. She's off the charts for height and weight. What the heck is in my milk? Anyway, here's a shout out to all our family and friends who came--you're the best.

I thought if I wished really hard, my hair wouldn't fall out. But it has begun. The awful post-pregnancy hormone has been released and I'm starting to lose my hair. It's made me realize how devastating it must be for men to go bald. Hair is such a big deal and losing it sucks! Is there like a magic pill I can take to stop this? Help!!!

These are our sad faces--we are mourning the loss of my hair. Okay, not really. I just think she's cute even when she cries.

All moms have a crazy super talent I didn't know existed until now: they can decipher the need of their baby by the type of cry coming out of them. There's the "hungry cry," and the "sleepy cry;" the "hold me cry," and the "I'm hurt for real cry." But the best is the "fake cry." Baby Girl is pro at this. Sometimes I think she just likes to hear the sound of her own cry.

These pictures are in chronological order, all taken within a few minutes of each other. One second she's happy, the next she's crying. But wait, she's happy again two seconds later. What the heck, Baby Girl? Okay, okay, I'll allow the fake cry as long as you look this cute doing it. :)

Isn't autumn the best time of year? It's still warm outside but not so hot you want to melt. The colors! And you get to eat pumpkin food again. Let's be honest, the fall food is all the convincing I really need to make it my favorite season. On Sunday we drove around the Alpine Loop as a family (I have a family! It's still weird. And awesome.) to see the colors. We found this meadow that was basically the prettiest thing I've ever seen--take that, Twilight!

During our outing Baby Girl had one diaper blowout and peed on me twice, but didn't ruin her pretty dress. This can be considered a success because I usually have to change her whole outfit. I don't know how she times it, but her worst diaper messes are always when we are away from the house. At least now I've learned to carry extra clothes and about three more diapers than I think I'll actually need. The first time I left the house as a new mom I was so proud that I had packed the diaper bag with a diaper and wipees. (Ha!) When she needed a diaper change she ended up peeing all over the counter and her clothes. She went home naked. And I learned what packing a diaper bag really means.

Because today is officially the last day of summer, I thought I would celebrate with this post. This summer I've been taking pictures of all the beautiful sunsets for my little project: Summer Sunset Series.

Johnny has been a good sport and pulls the car over if we're out and about so I can take a picture, or comes and gets me if he thinks the sky is especially sunset-y.

I will be so sad when fall and winter are in full gear because the sky just isn't the same. There's nothing pretty about a sun that sets at 5:30 in the evening :(

Every September Johnny has to put up with my countdown until the Utah State Fair. I should start using an advent calendar for the occasion--that's how excited I get about it. I love petting the animals, oohing over giant vegetables, riding the ferris wheel, and eating carnie food.One year there was even a "freak show" (I HATE that term, but I'm not sure what else to call it--the unusual people and animal exhibit?). My only gripe about the fair is that you have to spend money to get in, only just to pay more money for everything else? That doesn't make sense. Oh, well. They can continue ripping me off because I will still go every year. Fall just wouldn't be the same without it.

This weekend Baby Girl had her very first play date. Jenny, Lindsay, Whitney, Carly and I met up at the park with our kids, but let's be honest, it was really a play date for us girls. I could get used to motherhood--no work, hanging out with friends in the middle of the day, I only have to get ready if I leave the house ... it's not so bad!

Johnny and I love love the farmers market downtown and we try to go every couple of weeks during the summer. We have been waiting for the past couple of years to be one of those "hip, urban couples" with the baby carrier and dog (you know the type) who frequent the market. Now that we have Baby Girl, we can finally pretend that we are (even though we're just posers).

Every time we go I get inspired to grow my own garden and be all organic. But that idea lasts about as long as it takes for me to run out of food, and then Walmart seems like a much better idea! Baby steps, right? Maybe I'll grow an herb garden first. Or maybe we'll just keep going to the farmers market and let the farmers do the growing and me do the buying. I like that plan.

Going to the cupcake isle at Orson Gygi is dangerous. I ended up buying like ten different prints of cupcake wrappers, and now I have to make cupcakes to fill them all.

These hummingbird cupcakes taste more like a really sweet breakfast muffin, but they are SOOO pretty. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time to dry the pineapples.

Hummingbird Cupcakes

Makes 24 cupcakes

Ingredients

    3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
    2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
    2 cups sugar
    3 large eggs
    2 cups mashed ripe banana (about 3 large)
    1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple, drained
    1 cup chopped walnuts, or pecans
    1 cup unsweetened desiccated coconut
    Cream Cheese Frosting
    Dried Pineapple Flowers

Directions
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.with rack in center. Line cupcake pan with paper liners; set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt; set aside.

    In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter, vanilla, and sugar until combined, about 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, incorporating each before adding the next. Beat at medium speed until mixture is pale yellow and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

    In a medium bowl, stir together banana, pineapple, walnuts, and coconut. Add to egg mixture, mixing until combined. Stir in flour mixture.

    Divide batter evenly among liners, filling about 2/3 full. Bake, rotating pans halfway through, until golden brown and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 25 to 28 minutes.

    Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cupcakes have cooled, use a small offset spatula to frost tops of each cupcake. Decorate with dried pineapple flowers, if desired. Serve at room temperature.

A few days ago Johnny's sister Missy and her kids met us downtown to play for the afternoon. We ate a delicious lunch at Hagermann's, visited my work peeps so they could meet Baby Girl, and played in the fountains at Gateway.

I kind of wish I wasn't too old to run through the fountains, but I can imagine the looks on people's faces if I had whipped out my swimming suit and frolicked in the water. Yikes.

Oh yeah, in the picture of Johnny, notice the handy dandy hand sanitizer in the stroller? We, okay, I, am paranoid about germs getting on Baby Girl! When is it okay to stop being the "crazy" mom and just let people touch/hold/look at your baby without freaking out?

While in the hospital, a photographer from Bella Baby Photography asked if she could take pictures of Baby Girl and we thought it was a great idea. And it was, until we looked at the photo gallery online playing with sappy music and we both just lost it. We were bawling. I still can’t listen to or sing that song in my head without crying. For the record, it’s “Sweet Baby” by Michelle Featherstone. Stupid song. I’m crying right now just thinking about it.

We were lucky enough to catch the photographer in the hospital when she was there for other babies, but in the future I will be booking them in advance for this service. I'm so happy I have these pictures of her at only one day old. I highly recommend this for other new moms.

Johnny and his friend Ryan do some crazy things together (like this). So I wasn't really surprised when Johnny started hauling kayaks over to Ryan's house so they could learn to do eskimo rolls in his swimming pool. This is just a typical evening activity, right?

Daisy has officially been booted. Poor puppy doesn't know why she's not our favorite girl anymore. But I'm actually really surprised at how well she's been taking it. I was expecting some ruined furniture or crazy behavior as a cry for attention, but she's done none of that.

Yes, I have turned into one of "those moms" who posts every single thing her child does. But I figure, if I'm the only one who ends up reading my own blog, I don't care! I could look at pictures of her all day long.

Baby Girl LOVES the water. I don't know if she's remembering the good old days in the womb or if she just likes getting wet, but she turns into a whole new baby when she takes a bath. She relaxes her limbs and goes into her own little world. Sometimes she even closes her eyes, sighs, and smiles like I would after a sinking into a hot bath. So cute!

the raspberry patch

Last week my sister Dani flew out to meet Baby Girl. It was great having her here and we did a lot of fun things, but one of my favorites was visiting the raspberry patch.

There's a self-pick raspberry patch out in the middle of nowhere and it's $2.50 a pound. A steal! It's run on the honor system, meaning you weight them yourself and leave money in a little jar they have on the table. I love the country and sometimes wish I could live out there so I could have my own gigantic raspberry patch. But then I realize Costco is too far away so I change my mind!

We ended up picking 37 pounds of raspberries and my mom and sisters made the most delicious jam. (And by "we" I mean everyone but me. I sat on a blanket with Baby Girl and watched them pick. Thanks, guys!)

The blue graph shows the contractions. I can't believe I couldn't feel those. I was lucky enough to get my epidural almost immediately and never really felt what a real contraction feels like.

Baby Girl's nursery is pretty much finished (minus some wall art).

I had a pretty clear vision of what I wanted, and because no store had it, I ended up making everything myself. Looking back, this was both the best and worst idea EVER.

I wrote this for LDS Living a while ago and forgot about it. I thought I would re-post it because it made me laugh. This is no joke. I really am this horrible of a cook.

My mom’s birthday was last weekend and I wanted to bake her an amazing cake. I found this recipe for a salted caramel chocolate cake and set out to make a culinary masterpiece. Above is Exhibit A: How my cake was supposed to look.

The recipe called for homemade caramel (this should have been my first clue that I was in over my head). My first attempt ended up tasting like a campfire. The second batch looked like evaporated milk. And round three came out as half caramel, half concrete. See above picture of campfire caramel.

Moving on, let’s talk about how more cake stuck to the parchment paper in my pans than actually made it onto the plate. The above picture is of crumbs that used to be shaped like a cake.

And then there was the ganache, or as I like to call it, melted chocolate chips with chunks of concrete from round three of caramel. It was a disaster.

So, would you like to see my results? I promise, you will feel good about yourself as a baker…

Have you ever waxed your nose?

It feels awesome. Afterwards, that is.

Getting it done is not so great, but it's totally worth it.

Johnny's a veteran of the nose wax, but our friend Ryan let me wax his for the first time.
