flag berry tart

I found this recipe in a Martha Stewart magazine in high school. I've been saving it all these years and finally had the opportunity to make it for a party! Yum!

Here's a link to the recipe, but don't judge me, my tart looks nothing like the perfection of Martha's!

high point

Here's an adventure I forgot to post.

High Point is a jungle-y mountainous area--quite beautiful. That is, until you have to hike it in 100-degree weather, with the bugs, for four hours.

Pretending to freak out before going through an especially jungly area (full of creepy crawlers, no doubt) with a machete.

Freaking out for real when bugs start to crawl on me.

A room with a view. Imagine having a house here, b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. (That's the ocean on the horizon.)

Now for the best part. When we got home we were beat, smelly, exhausted and I just wanted to go to bed. This is when Johnny says, "Ashley, don't freak out, but I found a tick." Yes, we got ticks. We spent the next hour searching and destroying the little suckers. I think I'll wait to go to High Point again when there's asphalt and flushing toilets.

the incident with the spider(s)

Because Johnny and I are only visiting, we've been staying at my mom's house on a mattress in the basement family room. Beggars can't be choosy. Anyway, the other night at around midnight I saw something crawling on the sheets next to me. I ran to turn on the lights and my sneaky suspicion that it was a creepy crawler was confirmed. There was a HUGE ugly spider sitting in the middle of our bed (girls exaggerate about the size of bugs, but Johnny will back me up, it was huge). I scream for Johnny to kill it so he grabs a pillow to smack it with, and when he hits it, hundreds of baby spiders explode across our bed!!! The horrors, the horrors! It was a nightmare come true. It took ten minutes to vacuum up the spiders plus the baby momma. Let's just say I slept in my mom's bed that night.

But the story gets better.

The next morning I go to make the bed so I shake out the blanket and hundreds more baby spiders go flying!!! This has to be a nightmare, but low and behold, I'm awake and baby momma number 2 is trying to make her escape! At this point I'm hysterical (and so glad I slept upstairs). We've since vacuumed and are in the process of spraying the basement but I think I'm permanently traumatized. Can you blame me?!

we're back! kind of

Just a quick update, Johnny and I have returned to America for a family vacation and we'll be here for a couple of weeks at least. Panama has been great, but wow, I have missed having lanes while driving, snow shack , and of course, ENGLISH!!!
